Virticus can save cities 30-50% on energy costs while
maintaining or improving safety levels.

Recently, the city of Muncie, Indiana, announced that it would be turning off 85% of its streetlights because of budget cuts. Many other cities, including Montgomery, Pennsylvania and South Portland, Maine have made similar announcements. But cities don't have to turn off the lights to save money.

Cities have an obligation to provide street lighting for public safety. But with energy costs rising and most city budgets running a deficit, there is significant pressure on local governments to cut the cost of lighting their streets.

The vast majority of streetlights today do not have mechanisms that allow for any individual-level control of the timing or the intensity of light, beyond a simple photocell. Our products provide the ability to provide the right amount of light at the right time. Just turning the lights on and off based on the time they are needed will typically reduce energy costs by 30%. By dimming lights when less light is needed, this figure rises to 50%.

Virticus works with cities to determine the best configuration to accomplish their goals. The exact type and configuration of light controllers, gateways, and enterprise software depends on how you want to deploy the technology and aggregate it to provide a central point of control. For example, cities can manage neighborhoods differently than intersections.

Our software allows you to create a general set of rules regarding how the streets are lit at different times of day, or on weekdays versus weekends. But we also provide an additional level of control, allowing exceptions to those rules, such as for holidays or special events. We have all the building blocks to make a fully customized solution that will pay for itself in less than four years.
